Stop Trying to Be Everywhere: Which Social Media Your Small Business Actually Needs
If you feel like you're failing at social media, it might be because someone told you to be on all of it. Nobody running a real business has time for that.
Here's the permission you've been waiting for: you can ignore most social media apps. Being consistent on one or two beats being invisible on six. Before you decide which ones, it helps to look at where people actually are, instead of where the marketing headlines say they are.

Pew Research Center surveyed more than 5,000 US adults, and the result surprises a lot of business owners. TikTok gets the headlines, but YouTube and Facebook reach far more American adults. Facebook alone reaches about twice as many people as TikTok. If your customers are homeowners, parents or retirees in your town, Facebook is probably not dead to you at all.
The only question that matters
Forget "which app is hottest?" Ask: where do the people who buy from me already spend their time, and what does my work look like when it's shown there?
Use this as a starting point:
- Your work looks amazing (salons, landscapers, bakers, tattoo artists, detailers): Instagram and Facebook. Before-and-after photos do the selling.
- You serve local homeowners (plumbers, roofers, cleaners, HVAC): Facebook, especially neighborhood groups, and your Google Business Profile. Trust beats style here.
- You explain things well (mechanics, advisors, trainers, repair pros): YouTube and short videos. Answer the questions customers ask you every week.
- Your customers are younger or you sell a fun product (boutiques, cafes, food trucks): Instagram and TikTok.
- You sell to other businesses (accountants, IT, consultants): LinkedIn and email.
What to post when you have no time
Most owners quit because they run out of ideas. So don't rely on ideas. Rotate these four, and you'll never stare at a blank screen again:
- Show the work. Before and after, the finished job, today's special. The simplest post is often the best one.
- Show the people. You, your team, the dog in the shop. People want to buy from people.
- Answer a question. "How often should I really service my AC?" Every question a customer asks you is a post.
- Share the proof. A screenshot of a great review, with your thanks. Your customers do the selling for you.
The 20-minute weekly routine
Here's how to get a week of posts without giving up your Sunday:
- During the week, take photos whenever something looks good. Don't post them yet.
- Once a week, sit down for 20 minutes and pick your three best.
- Write one or two sentences for each, and finish with a next step: "Call us," "Book online" or "Message us."
- Schedule them. Facebook and Instagram have a free built-in scheduler, so you're not posting from a job site.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Social media is a place you rent, not a place you own. The platform decides who sees your posts, and it can change the rules, or lock your account, on any given day. That's why every post should point somewhere you control: your own website, your phone number or your email list.
Think of it this way. Social media is the sign out by the road. Your website is the shop. Nobody ever bought a sign.
How to know if it's working
Likes feel nice, but they don't pay rent. Track these instead:
- Messages and calls that started with a post.
- Clicks to your website, which you can see in your website's visitor stats.
- The answer to one question, asked of every new customer: "How did you hear about us?"
Try one platform for 90 days before you judge it. If nothing's coming from it, switch. There's no shame in leaving an app that doesn't work for your business.
Your job for this week
Pick your one or two apps. Fill in your profile completely, including your website link, hours and phone number. Then take three photos of your work this week and post one. That's it. You're now doing more than most of your competitors.
