Selling Online to Local Customers: Pickup, Delivery and Easy Ways to Get Paid
When most owners hear "online store," they picture boxes, labels and trips to the post office. But some of the best online orders a small business gets never get shipped at all. They get picked up, with a smile, at your counter.
Why order-ahead works so well for local shops
- Customers know they'll get it. No more showing up to find the sourdough sold out.
- You know what to make. Pre-orders tell you exactly how much to bake, pour or prepare.
- It's paid in advance, or at least committed to, so fewer no-shows.
- Pickup brings people in the door, where they often add something else.
- No shipping costs, which removes the biggest reason online shoppers walk away.

| Value | |
|---|---|
| Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees) | 40% |
| Delivery was too slow | 20% |
| Didn’t trust the site with card details | 19% |
| Had to create an account | 18% |
| Checkout too long or complicated | 17% |
| Site had errors or crashed | 17% |
| Returns policy not good enough | 13% |
| Couldn’t see the total cost up front | 12% |
| Not enough ways to pay | 9% |
Look at the top of that list. Extra costs like shipping are the number one reason shoppers abandon a checkout. Free local pickup takes that problem off the table for everyone nearby.
Set up pickup the simple way
- Choose your pickup times. "Pick up Friday 3 to 6 p.m. or Saturday 9 to noon" is easier to manage than any time at all.
- Write clear pickup instructions: where to go, who to ask, what to bring. For example: "Come to the front counter and give your name. We'll have your order ready."
- Set an order cut-off. "Order by Wednesday for Saturday pickup."
- Send a ready message. A quick text or email when it's done makes customers feel looked after.
Local delivery, if you want it
If you're happy to drop orders off nearby, keep the rules simple: one delivery area, one or two delivery days, and one flat fee. You can always grow it later. Many owners start by delivering on their way home on a set evening.
Get paid the way your customers already pay
About one in ten shoppers in Baymard's research left a checkout because there weren't enough ways to pay. For a local shop, there's no reason for that. You can offer:
- Credit and debit cards, through a processor like Stripe. Its standard US rate is 2.9% plus 30 cents per order.
- PayPal, which many people trust and already have.
- Venmo, Cash App and Zelle, which lots of local customers use every day. The order shows them who to pay and how much.
- Pay at pickup or on delivery, with cash or card, for regulars who prefer it.
When someone pays by Venmo, Cash App or Zelle, check that the money arrived, then mark the order as paid. Ask customers to put their order number in the payment note, so matching is easy.
