Local SEO Basics: How to Show Up When Neighbors Search

Local SEOOctober 14, 2026· 6 min read

Search engine optimization sounds technical, but for a local business it mostly comes down to one thing: making it obvious to Google what you do and where you do it. Here are the basics that move the needle.

1. Put your city and service in the right places

Your homepage headline, page titles and first paragraph should naturally mention your main service and your area. "Family-owned roofing company serving Austin and Round Rock" tells Google and customers exactly what they need to know.

2. Give each main service its own section or page

If you do lawn care, tree trimming and hardscaping, describe each one separately. Specific pages rank for specific searches, and customers find what they want faster.

3. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere

Google cross-checks your details on your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook and directories. "St." on one and "Street" on another is fine, but a different phone number or an old address causes confusion and can hurt your ranking.

4. Be fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on phones. A slow site or one where visitors have to pinch and zoom gets pushed down. Make sure your site loads quickly and your phone number is tappable.

5. Earn local links and mentions

6. Reviews are a ranking factor

The number of reviews, how recent they are and your average rating all influence local rankings. A steady trickle of new reviews beats a burst of twenty and then nothing for a year.

Quick win: Add a short "Areas we serve" list to your website footer or contact page with the towns and neighborhoods you cover.

Be patient, be consistent

Local SEO builds over weeks and months. The businesses that win are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. They're the ones that keep their information accurate, keep collecting reviews, and keep their website up to date.
